Countdown begins to Big Walk 2009...
Thursday 19th of November 2009 On the 20th November
2009 The Big Issue Foundation will be taking over London for the first ever Big Night Out Winter Walk! Over 200 participants will take to
the streets of the capital, walking 18 miles through the night to celebrate The Big
Issue’s 18th Birthday. The walk is being supported by a number of London organisations such as The BFI Imax and
The Roundhouse and The House of St Barnabas who
also work closely with the homeless community. The walk aims to raise £100k
to fund The Big Issue Foundation’s crucial support services for vendors of
the magazine. The
Big Issue Foundation’s Jay Hunt said, “We thought a sponsored night
walk would be a great way for people to get involved, and seeing some of
London’s most iconic landmarks (including St Paul’s Cathedral, Tate
Modern and Trafalgar Square) by night will be a truly magical experience. As
it’s a winter walk so it’s going to be cold and dark, giving walkers a
glimpse of the reality faced by the thousands of people who sleep rough in the UK
every night.” Big
Issue vendor Steve Farrell-Wood has helped to organise the walk.
“I’m seriously looking forward to it, it’s going to be a good fun
night out,” he said. “I proposed the walk to Big Issue vendors in
Covent Garden, and they were very enthusiastic. It promotes the great work that the
Foundation does for us, and it gives them an opportunity to actually be part of
what’s going on.” The Big Issue Foundation would like to thank The BFI Imax, The
Roundhouse and The House of St Barnabus for their kind help in organising The
Big Walk 2009.
